Topeka Tops Sugar Land Again 8-3
Another night, another big number on the board for your Topeka Capitals. Scoring early and often, the Caps outslugged a late rally by the Imperials to take their fifth straight against them in an 8-3 victory.
In the first period, Georgy Ostapchuk took a feed from behind the net and zipped a one-timer over the left shoulder of Colton Anderson to give the Caps and early 1-0 lead. That’s where the score would stay until the second period when Nolan Stanley scored the first of his three hat trick goals at 2:38.
The dam broke less than four minutes later as Austin Petrie, Ostapchuk, and Faber pounded in three goals in less than two minutes (at 6:02, 7:18, and 7:40 respectively) blasting the Caps ahead 5-0. Cole Sharrah stopped the bleeding temporarily with a power play goal to dent the scoreboard for Sugar Land but Stanley quickly responded with his second goal at 10:21 to make it 6-1 heading into the third.
The Imperials’ Matthew Winkle almost single-handedly got Sugar Land back into the game with two goals early in the third period, cutting the score to 6-3. Benton Deanovich righted the ship with a netter that increased the lead to four and Stanley completed his hat trick to end the scoring on the night at 8-3 Caps. Trenton Faber led the way with five points (one goal, four assists), while Nolan Stanley followed close behind with four of his own (three goals, one assist). Goaltender Mike McElroy moved his record to 5-5 and Topeka increased their division lead to 15 points.
These two teams lock horns once again this Saturday night at 7pm and Sunday morning at 11:30am. The Caps return to landon Arena on January 25th and 26th to take on the Dallas Junior Blues. For more information on tickets, call 785-286-PUCK or visit www.topekacapitals.com.
