Caps Continue Dominance With 5-3 Win Over Stars

In the South Division's short existence, every team has had their ups and downs. Fortunately for division-leading Topeka, their ups have been a little more plentiful. In their eighth meeting this season, the Caps overcame an early deficit to defeat Dallas 5-3.

The first was scoreless until 14:19 when Kole Hudson (assisted by Georgy Ostapchuk) found the net, giving the Caps a 1-0 lead. After a tripping call on Jayden Munnelly, Jake Huspen tied it up on the power play for Dallas at 15:37. A minute and a half later Corey Burns scored to make it 2-1 Stars after one.

The second period was all Trenton Faber as he flipped the lead in favor of Topeka with two goals (on a power play assisted by Ostapchuk and Hudson at 12:06, assisted by Nick Rizzo and Munnelly at 15:27) and it was 3-2 Caps heading into the final period. Joe Stoneburner made it 4-2 Caps with an unassisted goal at 2:19. Maxim Ledyankin narrowed the gap at 14:15 but it would be Dallas' last as, with the goalie pulled in the final minute, Nick Manney hit an empty netter with three seconds remaining in regulation and the Caps took the first game of the series 5-3.

Topeka and Dallas are back at it tomorrow night at 7:30. For more information on upcoming games and tickets, call 785-286-PUCK or visit www.topekacapitals.com.
